LED High-Bay Lighting
What are professional LED high bays lights and where are they used?
LED high-bays are surface-mounted LED fixtures with a very high light output, often with a waterproof housing. Therefore, they are mainly used in rooms with high ceilings; 4 metres or higher. You often find these high ceilings in industrial environments, such as production halls, sheds and warehouses. But don't forget sports halls, station halls and riding stables.
How many LED high bays do I need and in what wattage?
How many high-bays you need depends on several factors: the height of the ceiling and the beam angle as well as the light output of the fixture. After all, the ceiling height determines what the minimum light output (lm) should be. For this, there is also the BS EN 12464-1 standard, of which we show the Lux requirements for industrial work and logistics in this blog. The beam angle determines how much area is illuminated by one high-bay. So it is not so much the wattage that determines the number of fixtures. However, if you still have conventional high-bays, the wattage of these fixtures is a good starting point. The table below gives an indication based on all these elements.
Install Height (m) | Beam Angle (D) | Lumens (lm) | Surface (m2) | Wattage (W) | Replaces (W) |
3 - 4m | 90° - 120° | Tot 10.000lm | 6 - 14m2 | 30 - 70W | 200W |
4 - 6m | 90° - 120° | 10.000 - 20.000lm | 8 - 21m2 | 70 - 100W | 200 - 250W |
6 - 8m | 90° - 120° | 20.000 - 25.000lm | 12 - 28m2 | 100 - 150W | 250 - 400W |
8 - 10m | 60° - 90° | 25.000 - 28.000lm | 9 - 20m2 | 150 - 200W | 400 - 500W |
10m > | 60° - 90° | 28.000 - 35.000lm | 12m2 > | 200 - 300W | 400 - 500W |

Can conventional fixtures be replaced one-on-one by LEDs?
Certainly! Conventional high-bay lighting is fitted with an HQL, HPI or other HID bulb, which means that you only need to dismantle your old fixture to fit a new one. The big advantage of this step, is that you save at least 50% in energy and can also light for a long time with no replacement and maintenance costs.
How do you install LED high bay lights?
LED high bays are suspended from the ceiling using mounting gear. This can be done in three ways:
- Using a cable or chain, which is mounted to the ring at the top of the round high-bay.
- Using a mounting bracket, where the two ends of the bracket are attached to the top of the fixture.
- Using a pendant system for the square and rectangular high-bay fixtures.
At all times, make sure you have switched off the power and fuses before connecting the fixture to the power supply.
What is a UFO LED high bay light?
LED high bays are often also called UFO lights. This refers to the round high bay variants, which are reminiscent to the principle of a UFO due to their saucer shape and downward-facing light beam. At Any-Lamp, we also have a wide range of these. Which LED high bay UFO from Philips, Noxion or Ledvance will you choose? A commonly used 4000K variant, a (DALI) dimmable model or rather a LED high bay light in 3000K, which is becoming increasingly popular?
