LED Lights - characteristics and advantages

Since its conception, LED (light emitting diode) technology has transformed the way in which we light our homes and businesses. Compared to traditional halogen and fluorescent lighting, LED lamps are incredibly versatile, and the technology has advanced to the point where LED lighting now covers many of the same application areas as traditional lighting.

LED lighting has many advantages in comparison to traditional lighting:

Lower Energy Consumption: It ‘s no secret that LED technology is the most efficient and energy-saving means of illumination available on the market today. Unlike traditional bulbs, which lose up to 80% of electricity as heat, LED lamps operate at 80-90% lighting efficiency with only 10-20% dispersed as heat. The result of switching to LED is a dramatic reduction on the cost of your energy bills. And compared to traditional lighting methods, LED lamps switch on at full brightness, with no flickering or background-hum emitted.

Longer Lifetime: Compared to a standard halogen bulb, which has an average lifetime of 2000 hours, LED bulbs have a significantly improved life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours. And unlike a traditional bulb, which will burn out and fail to work altogether, LED bulbs will simply dim over time as the power output from the diodes within the lamp lessens over time. That means you will only have to replace your LED bulb once every few years, saving you the hassle and cost of multiple replacements and lessening the workload of your maintenance crew.

Robust and Durable: Here at Any-Lamp we only stock products from world-renowned manufacturers whose names are synonymous with quality, such as Philips, Osram and Sylvania. In contrast to the delicate nature of traditional lighting, LEDs are much more durable in comparison. LED lighting will continue to operate at much colder temperatures than traditional bulbs, making them the ideal choice for outdoor or warehouse lighting. Because LED lamps produce little heat and zero UV emissions, they are the sensible choice for illuminating art galleries and products sensitive to heat damage.

Superior Colour Rendering: Most LED products have a colour rendering index of 80Ra or higher, meaning that colours are represented faithfully. This makes LED lighting the smart choice for art galleries, clothes shops and retail applications. Many LED bulbs are dimmable, allowing for flexible lighting and full control over mood and light distribution. They are available in a vast range of colour temperatures (Kelvin) to suit every environment, whether you need lighting to promote alertness in the office, or want to replicate the cosy ambient glow of a traditional halogen lightbulb.

No Chemicals: Unlike traditional forms of lighting, LED bulbs are chemical and gas-free and are 100% recyclable. Coupled with a drastically increased life expectancy and reduced energy consumption, switching to LED is another important means through which we can pave the way for a greener future and champion the cause for clean, sustainable lighting solutions.

How to make the switch to LED:

Don’t be daunted at the thought of changing to LED – it’s likely to be easier than you think.

Make a note of the features of your existing bulb or tube – wattage, colour temperature and socket type are all important specifications you will need to bear in mind to find your LED replacement. In most cases, the wattage and socket type should remain the same, but the colour temperature can vary depending on whether you want a warmer or a cooler light.

It is very important to ensure that the socket type of the LED bulb is the same as the original bulb:

  • E14 and E27: Screw fit, with a diameter 14 and 27mm respectively.
  • B15 and B22: Bayonet cap in which the distance between the two pins is 15 mm/ 22mm.
  • GU4, G4, GU5.3 and GU10: Traditional spotlights, typically mounted in ceilings
  • G53: Spotlights in the AR111 shape which contain an aluminium reflector. The distance between the two pins is 53mm.

And don’t forget to consider whether you need the replacement LED to be dimmable, or have a specific beam angle. The beam angle indicates the direction and degree to which the light is scattered, and is usually applicable to fluorescent tubes and GU10/GU5.3 halogen spotlights.

And of course, you can always contact our customer services team for assistance in finding the correct LED lamps.
