What is a capsule bulb?
Capsule bulbs are compact light sources that can be installed in even the smallest luminaires. They owe their name to the design of the light source. All capsule bulbs have two pins that can be inserted into the desired fixture. The light sources with a 'G...' base have another reference. The 'G' refers to glass; the material the pins were originally made of. The number mentioned with these fittings indicates how much distance there is between the pins.
What types of LED capsule bulbs are there?
In our webshop, you will find a wide range of LED capsule bulbs that can either be connected directly to the power network (230V) or need a transformer to convert 230V to 12V. These are the four most popular models:
- LED capsule bulbs with G4 socket - With this light source, the pins are 4mm apart. All G4 LEDs need a transformer to work.
- LED lights with G9 fitting - This bulb has a socket in which the pins are 9mm apart. They operate on 230 volts, which allows them to be connected directly to the power supply.
- LED lights with GY6.35 socket - The pins of this compact LED are 6.35mm apart. These products all need a transformer.
- LED capsule bulbs with R7s base - These LEDs have one pin at each end and are 78mm or 118mm long.
What are capsule bulbs suitable for?
Due to their small size, LED capsule bulbs can be used in many ways. You can think of display cabinets and other furniture, extractor hoods, refrigerators, spotlight fixtures and in vehicles such as motor homes, caravans and boats. R7s light sources have an additional field of application, because these light sources can be placed in street lights when they have a high light output.
Capsule bulbs are available in three colour temperatures: very warm white (2700K), warm white (3000K) and cool white (4000K). Therefore, you have a good fit for every application. Warm light colours are often used for atmospheric rooms, while cool white is ideal for workstations.
Are LED capsule bulbs dimmable?
Yes, there are capsule bulbs that can be dimmed. These are the R7s, G9 and G4 versions. Please note that you can only dim these light sources with a LED dimmer. Dimmers have a minimum and maximum load, which may not be exceeded by the total wattage of the connected light sources. The wattage of a LED light bulb is so low that it does not reach the minimum load of a conventional dimmer. Using a LED dimmer prevents LED from flickering or even from not working at all. You can view all LED dimmers via this link. Does your dimmable LED light bulb use a transformer? You need a dimmable transformer to dim the light source.
What do I need to consider when replacing a halogen capsule bulb with LED?
Capsule bulbs with two pins can easily be replaced by a LED model. This is just as easy as replacing a conventional light that is no longer usable. Do note that LED variants can differ in size, so it is important to pay close attention to the dimensions. In addition, the light source must have the right wattage. With our filter function 'Replaces (Watt)' you can display all suitable bulbs.
How do you dispose of capsule bulbs correctly?
The disposal of LED capsule bulbs is very simple. LEDs are recyclable and contain no toxic substances such as mercury, so they can be taken to municipal collection points. These include hazardous waste collection centres, recycling centres, the manufacturer or sales outlets for electronic equipment.
If you still have conventional capsule bulbs at home, you can dispose of them safely in the household waste. Why? Conventional variants are halogen and thus contain no mercury or valuable substances.
